WWII had the first profound impact on the island. It is perhaps best known as
the inspiration for James A. Michener's classic
"Tales of the South Pacific"
During the course of WWII, over 100,000 allied troops and support staff were stationed here.Amid the thick jungle there are remnants of crashed B17 bombers, deserted Dakotas and Quonset huts. Many of the buildings in the only town, Luganville, are old Quonset huts, with fences of upright Marsden matting rusting away under a deluge of decorative vines.
Amazingly, VANUATU is now home to the owners of Kazaa., the most popular online file-swapping system in the world. Over the past two years, the oddly named product, used by roughly 160 million people who downloaded the software, primarily to trade music, TV shows and movies over the Internet. At any given time, more than 3 million people are running the program, double the number that Napster had at its peak.B. FunaFuti Atoll, Ellice Island, part of Tuvalu, Near Gilbert Islands
